On Friday June 1st and Saturday June 2nd, fast, furious
and flying feet will gather from far and near for the
San Francisco Shag Jam. Nearly 80 years after the swing kids
of 1930 started dancing the Collegiate Shag, a melting pot
of young and old conveen to flip, flop and fly on the dance floor.
A vintage swing dance of the 1930's, the Collegiate Shag
is danced side by side, or in open and closed position. Footwork,
kicks, spins and close connection, the Collegiate Shag reminds you
of the old-time cartoons in which the legs looked like noodles!
The Collegiate Shag became so popular that even the prim and proper Arthur
Murray taught the Collegiate Shag!
Friday Night, aka "The Varsity Drag" features a Beginning Shag
Lesson with SF Jitterbugs Johnny Lee & Jenna Chalmers, live music
with Stompy Jones, Dance Performances, Collegiate Shag Contest
Pre-Liminaries, Pin-Ups and Classic Cars! Join in on the history
and dress in your best College/Varsity Sweater wear.
Saturday Day features 5 Collegiate Shag Classes with
SF Jitterbugs Johnny Lee & Jenna Chalmers and '06 National
Jitterbug Collegiate Shag Champion, Sailor Mike & Laura from Los Angeles.
Saturday Night, aka "The Collegiate Ball" features live music
