Hi!

What are your favorite pieces to swing/lindy to and why? Do you like pieces that are faster? Do you prefer a slow groove? Are there songs that just make you smile? Songs that make you feel sexy?

Thoughts?

I'm fond of

Several tracks on Live in Swing City by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra -- most notably c-jam blues because it is so damned sexyfun!
Also love to dance to "It Ain't the Meat" because it is a fun tempo and because it is intrinsically playful to dance to with a little bit of spicy because of the lyrics.

More will come to mind I'm sure but I thought this might be a fun thread to start.

Rouge your knees, roll your stockings down, start the car, and come join us and host Billy Flynn, Esquire, at the hottest party in Chicago for All That Jazz! PEERS is proud (and truly amazed) to announce that the evening's band will be the one, the only, the incomparable Lee Presson and the Nails.

1920’s or 30’s costume or vintage or modern evening dress (white or black tie optional) is admired, but not required. The year is 1931 but we won't hold you to that.

The music will range from elegant vintage ballroom dance music (waltzes, tangos, fox trots, and even polkas!) to cool blues and hot Swing of the 1920's and early ‘30's – perhaps with a few musical surprises along the way. For guests wishing to brush up on their vintage dance skills, there will be a pre-ball dance lesson in vintage Foxtrot and Swing at 7:00 p.m. with Persephone and Charles. Even if you’re a novice, they’ll soon have you gliding along the floor like young Fred Astaire and swinging like a gate.

Intermission entertainment includes both a half-time floor show and DJ dance music for you insatiable dancers. To fortify us for these vigorous dance sets, a complimentary light snack buffet will be served throughout the evening. (In our current Depression, your potluck contributions are always appreciated!).

It's only $10 before 10pm ($15 after). Want to learn how to dance, come by 9:15 and join my dance lessons upstairs. Stay late and dance to the gothic swing stylings of Lee Presson and the Nails.

reading aloud scripts from TV, plays, movies, such as the Simpsons, Seinfeld, Friends, Mash, All in the Family, Hamlet, Shakespeare in Love,Buffy, Coupling, American Beauty. There are many scripts on the table. Pick one that you would like to read aloud. Select a table, invite others to join in. Everyone selects a character, and start reading aloud.

Food Sampler There is a different food sampler each Social Sampler. Some food sampler themes are ice creams, chocolates, coffees, potato chips, cookies. Odd Ice Creams with be sampled for May 26: Avacado, Buko (Baby Coconut), Ginger, Green Tea, Halo Halo (Buko, Langka, Ube, Pineapple, Mongo &Sweet Beans), Langka (also known as Jackfruit, a relative of the Fig), Lychee, Mango, Thai Tea, Sweet Coconut, and Ube (purple Yam).

Sing alongs
Sea Shanteys are songs traditionally sung by sailors to accompany and set the rhythm for certain kinds of heavy, repetitive work on board ship—raising and trimming the sails, raising the anchor, and working the pumps.

Musicals are the songs from musical plays and movies, such as Sound of Music, Grease, Singing in the Rain, Brigadoon, Hair, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls.

Folk songs are just that: traditional folk songs.

"Breakin' the Rules" swing class in SF

Stephen and I are teaching a special 3-part swing class in San Francisco starting tonight! This class will run the next 3 Thursdays and you can take them individually or as a series.

We call our class "Breaking the Rules"

When we first learn to partner dance, certain rules are laid out to give us a structure with which to work with. However, there is a time for rules... and a time to break ‘em. In the spirit of never taking anything at face value, we plan to challenge some of lindy hops most basic tenets. Don’t break your frame, no lifts on the social dance floor, focus on your partner, don’t run with scissors, etc, etc. We aim to misbehave.

Price $18 drop-in / $45 series. No partner required. All levels are invited to take this class, but it is primarily an Intermediate/Adv class.

This class will be at the "9:20 Special" (Russian Center, 2460 Sutter).

last guy that asked me to dance sweated all over me and ended up practically
dragging me all over the floor. nothing worse than a giant man trying to dance
with a tiny woman. I end up running all over the floor.

Kim Nalley's Jazz at Pearls (in North Beach on Columbus between
Kearney and Broadway, see http://www.jazzatpearls.com) now has a nice
wooden dance floor installed. I went there last night to enjoy Mitch
Woods and his Rocket 88s, who do a mix of blues, New Orleans style
jazz and boogie woogie. It's a very classy place with good
atmosphere. It's also very dancer friendly. Kim's husband, and the
co-owner of Pearls, Steve, is keen to invite more swing dancers to
come and use the dance floor. He asked me to pass on the message to
the swing community that any dancers who get there tonight, Saturday,
November 19th, after 10:30pm (it goes until 1am) can get in FREE
(just let Juliana at the door know you're a swing dancer, normal
entrance is $15 so this is very decent of them) and he's keeping the
bar seating specially available for us dancers! Mitch will be playing
again tonight so it's going to be lots of great dance music.

Besides tonight, Kim sings there every Tuesday and she always get's
up and dances too. If you haven't heard Kim, she's a great vocalist,
fabulous to dance to.

Hope to see some of you out at Pearls from time to time.

I used to be a considerable fan of Indigo Swing -- "Ruby Mae" is the name of a delightful song from the "Red Light!" album -- and I'm excited about the chance to hear some of the old Indigo Swing songs and musicians at a live concert.

I'm curious as to whether anyone else is considering going to the Rubymae concert next month and, mostly, has anyone been to the Fellowship Hall of the Unitarian Universalist Church? What's the dance floor like in the Fellowship Hall there?

I am making a CD called "Songs To Clear the Dance Floor" (my friends are DJ's at a local swing club and this is a "gag" CD for them)

I need to know in your opinion what you would call a "Bad" dance song. I mean I have stuff like:
Alien Fashion Show's "Detroit Swing City",
Save Ferris's "Superspy",
and Jackie Chan w/ Ani Difranco doing "Unforgettable"

you know... stuff like that.

So any input would be good. I am looking for anything, modern BAD swing, modern music you can swing to (like Eminem's "Just Lose It"), even old swing that is just bad.

LitP 9 Year Anniversary - August 13th

Well, if you come to one Lindy in the Park (LitP) this year, I recommend coming to the 9 Year Anniversary potluck and barbecue celebration on Sunday, August 14th, starting at eleven o'clock in the morning. While LitP usually ends around 2:00 PM, the Anniversary celebration will feature extended hours, with splendid music and dancing until 4:00 PM.

Traditionally, the LitP anniversary has also featured a lot of fun people, nice weather, and some great food, including several grills. The chefs are usually also pretty good about keeping the flames and heat away from the dancers, especially since last time the cooking started to interfere with the dancing, one of the DJ's (i.e., Ken Watanabe) played "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" ... :)

24-Hour Cancer Dance-a-thon (So Cal)

The guy who leads the local Swing Dance community here in Orange County mailed out the following:

"Several years ago I participated in a 24 hour walk-a-thon for the American Cancer Society called Relay for Life. I had a great time and I was proud to support a great cause but I thought..."I would have even a better time if I was doing something I loved like Swing Dancing." So after a few years of keeping this idea in my pocket Nikki and I are proud to be throwing the 24 Hour Cancer Dance-a-thon. We are volunteering all our efforts. 100 percent of the profits will go directly to the City of Hope. We would like you to participate in this special event by becoming a participant or at least by sponsoring a participant.

I used to go out dancing a lot back in the good ol' mid-90s and see Indigo Swing, Steve Lucky, Lee Press-On, etc... then I got fat and lazy and stopped going out as much. Now I need to get off my ass and get out there again but things have changed. Which bands are still around? Are there any new bands that have sprung up that you all like for dancing? What venues still have swing nights?

SF Swing Question

I know about LitP on Sundays,
but mid-day on Saturdays I've seen a small group of swing kids dancing just off Haight St. I think it's actually ON the corner of Haight/Asbury, but it might be a block off. Right next to the Positively Haight Street touristy shop.

Anyone know anything about this??
