Favorite pieces to swing dance to and why?

Hi!

What are your favorite pieces to swing/lindy to and why? Do you like pieces that are faster? Do you prefer a slow groove? Are there songs that just make you smile? Songs that make you feel sexy?

Thoughts?

I'm fond of

Several tracks on Live in Swing City by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra -- most notably c-jam blues because it is so damned sexyfun!
Also love to dance to "It Ain't the Meat" because it is a fun tempo and because it is intrinsically playful to dance to with a little bit of spicy because of the lyrics.

More will come to mind I'm sure but I thought this might be a fun thread to start.

I live in Somerville. There needs to be a free weekly swing dance around here. Specifically, Davis Square's T stop. The nice little paved area in front of JP Licks would be ideal to host a swing dance. All we need is/are:

a boom box
crazy swing dancers and the desire to dance

LEE PRESSON & THE NAILS AT PEERS' MAY 3 CHICAGO BALL

THE CHICAGO ALL-THAT-JAZZ BALL
Saturday, May 3, 2008
Location: San Mateo Masonic Temple
100 N. Ellsworth Avenue, San Mateo
Doors Open: 6:45 p.m.
Vintage Dance Lesson: 7:00- 8:00 pm.
Formal Dancing begins: 8:00 p.m.
Band: Lee PressOn and the Nails
Tickets: $15.00 in advance (by April 26); $20.00 at the door
Ball Website: http://peers.org/chicago.html

Rouge your knees, roll your stockings down, start the car, and come join us and host Billy Flynn, Esquire, at the hottest party in Chicago for All That Jazz! PEERS is proud (and truly amazed) to announce that the evening's band will be the one, the only, the incomparable Lee Presson and the Nails.

1920’s or 30’s costume or vintage or modern evening dress (white or black tie optional) is admired, but not required. The year is 1931 but we won't hold you to that.

The music will range from elegant vintage ballroom dance music (waltzes, tangos, fox trots, and even polkas!) to cool blues and hot Swing of the 1920's and early ‘30's – perhaps with a few musical surprises along the way. For guests wishing to brush up on their vintage dance skills, there will be a pre-ball dance lesson in vintage Foxtrot and Swing at 7:00 p.m. with Persephone and Charles. Even if you’re a novice, they’ll soon have you gliding along the floor like young Fred Astaire and swinging like a gate.

Intermission entertainment includes both a half-time floor show and DJ dance music for you insatiable dancers. To fortify us for these vigorous dance sets, a complimentary light snack buffet will be served throughout the evening. (In our current Depression, your potluck contributions are always appreciated!).

Special Announcement from Mr. Lee Presson himself: “The first 100 people who attend the May Chicago Ball will get a free Lee Presson and the Nails CD.”

To order advance tickets, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. To order tickets online via PayPal, please go to the ball website at http://peers.org/chicago.html, scroll down, and click on the PayPal icon for instructions. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20.00 each.

For information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org.

Driving Directions:
Take the 3rd Avenue exit off 101, going west into San Mateo. Follow 3rd Avenue across the railroad tracks and turn right on Ellsworth Avenue. The Masonic Lodge - a white three-story Colonial style Edwardian building - is located on the corner of Ellsworth and Tilton.

http://www.sacjazz.org/sunday.html

Our monthly "meetings" are more like "parties": We hire a special guest artist or well-known band to entertain our members as they gather to socialize, dance, or just hang out and listen to some great LIVE music. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., music starts at noon and continues till 5:00 p.m. We meet at the Dante Club where there's good food and a full-service bar. Admission is $7 for members and $12 for non-members. Students (age 12-20): student members $3; student non-members $5. Under 12: free. (Directions below.)

You'll find three rooms playing live music simultaneously! Our guest musicians play on the Main Stage, our "Gold Card Musicians" play in Le Cabaret, and then there are the jam sessions that take place in the Tailgate Room. Once a month, we feature a local youth band on Main Stage at noon (Set 1), then again in the Tailgate Room for Set 3. (Five sets x 3 rooms = a lotta music!)

Come and party with us from NOON to 5:00 at

The Dante Club

A vintage swing dance of the 1930's, the Collegiate Shag
kicks, spins and close connection, the Collegiate Shag reminds you
of the old-time cartoons in which the legs looked like noodles!

"Breakin' the Rules" swing class in SF

Stephen and I are teaching a special 3-part swing class in San Francisco starting tonight! This class will run the next 3 Thursdays and you can take them individually or as a series.

We call our class "Breaking the Rules"

When we first learn to partner dance, certain rules are laid out to give us a structure with which to work with. However, there is a time for rules... and a time to break ‘em. In the spirit of never taking anything at face value, we plan to challenge some of lindy hops most basic tenets. Don’t break your frame, no lifts on the social dance floor, focus on your partner, don’t run with scissors, etc, etc. We aim to misbehave.

Price $18 drop-in / $45 series. No partner required. All levels are invited to take this class, but it is primarily an Intermediate/Adv class.

This class will be at the "9:20 Special" (Russian Center, 2460 Sutter).

All the info is here:
http://www.920special.com/classes/extensions.html

And don't forget, you can find us again at Camp Swing:
http://www.campswing.com/

See you there!

New Blues dancing in Palo Alto

Announcing a new Blues dancing venue in Palo Alto.

Many people are surprised at how much they appreciate the freedom of
expression in blues dancing. Worth your time to check it out at least once.

Description of Blues Dancing below
.2nd Tuesday of the Month
..August 8 September 12 October 10 November 14 December 12
...$7 for class and dance
....casual comfortable attire
.....no partner needed
......First United Methodist Church upstairs Fellowship hall
.......625 Hamilton Avenue Palo Alto X Byron ok to park in church lot
.......Entrance in courtyard, facing away from street
........Mihai instructing introductory Blues dancing from 7 to 8. a
national leader in blues teaching
.........Linda Maxwell Djing from 8 to 11. 10 years lindy and blues DJing

Blues dancing has a very close, personal, intimate embrace of dancing,
somewhat similar to Argentine Tango.

from St. Louis Blues exchange website:

Blues dance, like Lindy Hop and Swing, came into being as a reflection
of swing and jazz music. Many aspects of Blues dance (call and response,
emotional intensity and expressiveness, and tension and release) are
directly related to the music to which it is danced. There are many
types of blues music, rural, urban, up-tempo, slow, electric, gutbucket,
delta, modern, etc., all with very different nuances and emotions.

Blues dance enables intense individuality in expressing the music. It
really is all about communication, emphasizing that the music, not the
dancer, leads the dance; we are simply the interpreters. Blues dance
demonstrates the passion of the entire range of human emotions, not just
the sensual ones. If you don’t have a visceral reaction to the music,
your partner, and the environment, then you are missing the wonders of
dancing blues.

In addition, learning to blues dance will enable the dancer to more
fully understand concepts such as simplicity, clarity, creativity,
expression, intensity, active listening, and musical and emotional
interpretation. The connection between these concepts is critical to
advanced social dancing of any kind. It is for this reason that learning
blues dancing will help and improve your Lindy Hop.

Since there seemed to be alot of interest...
I talked Spike Vampire Bar into a swing dance on the outside stage.

This will *probably* happen Thursday late afternoon, early evening...
People will be on hand to give lessons... Feel free to bring a cd of your favorite tracks.

Spike is on the "Wheel of Fortune" at Center Camp (1:30ish)

See you there!

Two years ago, there were at least 2 or 3 camps that had dancing!

There's a 50/50% chance I might not be able to make it due to leave/money considerations, but I would very much like to see Ria and Nick!

i want to learn to dance but cant spend alot of $ on it. is it better to have a partner?
last guy that asked me to dance sweated all over me and ended up practically
dragging me all over the floor. nothing worse than a giant man trying to dance
with a tiny woman. I end up running all over the floor.
any suggestions?

This just in from the SFSwing list:

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

THE LAST HOWL AT THE DOGHOUSE!!
(Kibble included)

Last Night at the Doghouse at Rhythm and Motion building (Knights of the Red
Branch) Will be this weekend Saturday February 25th.

Join the pack for the last night at the old location for an incredible celebration!

JUST IN!!!!!!
We will be open late night UNTIL 4:00AM so come sweat the night away but
bring an extra change of clothes.

We will also have food (At least that's what Pat Poon calls it) because you can't
possible last UNTIL 4:00AM without sustenance.

DJ's Jesse and Chad will spin the night away

The Doghouse is moving to the spectacular new ODC Dance Commons be there
for our incredible grand opening night March 4th!
Check the web for more information

After 25 years in its current location, Rhythm & Motion Dance Studio has joined
forces with San Francisco's premier dance organization, ODC (Oberlin Dance
Collective). The Doghouse will move, along with Rhythm & Motion, into ODC's
new Dance Commons, a state-of-the-art facility newly built by dancers for
dancers. Great things are in store for the Doghouse at the new ODC:

3 Brand New State of the Art Dance Studios
Sprung Wood Floors
5,500 Total Sq. Ft.
3 New Sound Systems
Air Conditioned Studios
Comfortable Lounge Area with Couches

We will miss the historic Knights of the Red Branch Hall - the Doghouse has had
seven great years there (that is 49 in dog years), which we will never forget.
Change is sometimes hard, but this change will be great for the Doghouse, and
we've got exciting things in store, like:

Always 3 classes, 3 DJs, 3 rooms of dancing!
Always a variety of styles to choose from: Classic, Blues, Balboa, you name it!
Classic swing movies projected on LCD screens around you!
The Bay Area's best teaching talent always on tap!

ODC Dance Commons is located at 351 Shotwell, between 17th & 18th St.

24-hour public parking lot 1/2 block south, corner of Shotwell and 17th
$1.50 Evening Parking on Saturdays

Prices will stay the same for now, but will increase slightly later in the Spring.

it's my girlfriend gina's birthday this thursday, and she was hoping to relive a little piece of our past by doing a lil drinkin and dancin at le colonial. unfortunately, they are booked with a big group event this thursday, so we are seeking greener pastures... anyone know of an sf/oakland/berkeley swing something (bar/club/swanky joint with big band music) going on this thursday night?

thanks!!

I'm helping an LA based marketing company recruit dancers for a two-day paid dancing gig. It's simple, dance from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 3rd and 4th and you make an easy $600.

See the post below in the "listings" section for details. Email Kara@buzztone.com if you have any questions.

Free dancing to Mitch Woods at Pearls tonight

This just in from the SFSwing list ...

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Kim Nalley's Jazz at Pearls (in North Beach on Columbus between
Kearney and Broadway, see http://www.jazzatpearls.com) now has a nice
wooden dance floor installed. I went there last night to enjoy Mitch
Woods and his Rocket 88s, who do a mix of blues, New Orleans style
jazz and boogie woogie. It's a very classy place with good
atmosphere. It's also very dancer friendly. Kim's husband, and the
co-owner of Pearls, Steve, is keen to invite more swing dancers to
come and use the dance floor. He asked me to pass on the message to
the swing community that any dancers who get there tonight, Saturday,
November 19th, after 10:30pm (it goes until 1am) can get in FREE
(just let Juliana at the door know you're a swing dancer, normal
entrance is $15 so this is very decent of them) and he's keeping the
bar seating specially available for us dancers! Mitch will be playing
again tonight so it's going to be lots of great dance music.

Besides tonight, Kim sings there every Tuesday and she always get's
up and dances too. If you haven't heard Kim, she's a great vocalist,
fabulous to dance to.

Hope to see some of you out at Pearls from time to time.

Cheers

Jeremy

Live swing band in Berkeley on Oct. 22nd

This just in from the SwingTalk board ...

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The Rubymae Memorial Dance Band is playing
their first dance on Saturday, October 22nd in Berkeley, Ca.

The band is led by William Beatty, pianist for Indigo Swing,
and will playing Louis Jordan, Ray Charles,
all kinds of swinging jump blues and boogie woogie, Indigo Swing tunes and on....

The band will be Josh Workman on guitar, also from Indigo Swing and Stompy Jones
David Rose on bass, Bowen Brown on drums, Jeff Ervin on sax

Rubymae Memorial Dance Band

Saturday, October 22nd
8 pm - 11 pm

The Fellowship Hall of the Unitarian Universalist Church
1924 Cedar St. at the corner of Bonita St.
Berkeley Ca.
$10 at the door

Dance Floor
Beer and Wine
DJ 78rpm

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I used to be a considerable fan of Indigo Swing -- "Ruby Mae" is the name of a delightful song from the "Red Light!" album -- and I'm excited about the chance to hear some of the old Indigo Swing songs and musicians at a live concert.

I'm curious as to whether anyone else is considering going to the Rubymae concert next month and, mostly, has anyone been to the Fellowship Hall of the Unitarian Universalist Church? What's the dance floor like in the Fellowship Hall there?

Need your input

I am making a CD called "Songs To Clear the Dance Floor" (my friends are DJ's at a local swing club and this is a "gag" CD for them)

I need to know in your opinion what you would call a "Bad" dance song. I mean I have stuff like:
Alien Fashion Show's "Detroit Swing City",
Save Ferris's "Superspy",
and Jackie Chan w/ Ani Difranco doing "Unforgettable"

you know... stuff like that.

So any input would be good. I am looking for anything, modern BAD swing, modern music you can swing to (like Eminem's "Just Lose It"), even old swing that is just bad.

Thank You. >:-)

LitP 9 Year Anniversary - August 13th

Well, if you come to one Lindy in the Park (LitP) this year, I recommend coming to the 9 Year Anniversary potluck and barbecue celebration on Sunday, August 14th, starting at eleven o'clock in the morning. While LitP usually ends around 2:00 PM, the Anniversary celebration will feature extended hours, with splendid music and dancing until 4:00 PM.

Traditionally, the LitP anniversary has also featured a lot of fun people, nice weather, and some great food, including several grills. The chefs are usually also pretty good about keeping the flames and heat away from the dancers, especially since last time the cooking started to interfere with the dancing, one of the DJ's (i.e., Ken Watanabe) played "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" ... :)

This Sunday it’s a return of one of our favorite nights of sizzling music and spicy dance floor excitement. Come down to Amnesia this Sunday for an international tour of the dancefloor beginning with a stop in the romantic dancehalls of Argentina with our favorite milonga maestros TANGO #9 and then RUBY IRON and THE K.O. COMBO will get your toes tapping with swinging tunes from the sepia toned dance crazy days of the USA.

Do you think you have two left hoofers? Do not dismay! Top-flight metronome Ballroom instructors Daniel Peters and Pier Voulkos will be on hand for a “pass the hat” introductory tango lesson at 8 pm to get you acquainted with the intimate mysteries of the world’s mot passionate dance. Don’t miss this one of a kind double bill this Sunday at Amnesia!

Vibrant, voluptuous and touched with timelessness, the wryly-sophisticated quartet Tango No. 9 truly embraces the sensuous rhythms and tangents of the tango. With tangos from vintage Piazzola to the present, they will transport you to a steamy black and red streaked Argentinean night.

Ruby Iron and her K.O. Combo deliver a knockout set of invigorating tunes from the 30’s and 40’s that are sure to put the jump back into your jive. Put on your fancy pants or your best dress and be prepared to have your socks knocked off by a K.O. combo that goes the distance.

What!?
Tango #9 with lesson at 8pm with Daniel Peters and Pier Voulkos
Ruby Iron and the K.O Combo

When!?
This Sunday, July 31st

Where!?
Amnesia
853 Valencia @ 20th

How Much!?
$7 – Wowza, what a deal!

24-Hour Cancer Dance-a-thon (So Cal)

The guy who leads the local Swing Dance community here in Orange County mailed out the following:

"Several years ago I participated in a 24 hour walk-a-thon for the American Cancer Society called Relay for Life. I had a great time and I was proud to support a great cause but I thought..."I would have even a better time if I was doing something I loved like Swing Dancing." So after a few years of keeping this idea in my pocket Nikki and I are proud to be throwing the 24 Hour Cancer Dance-a-thon. We are volunteering all our efforts. 100 percent of the profits will go directly to the City of Hope. We would like you to participate in this special event by becoming a participant or at least by sponsoring a participant.

Sincerely,
Shesha Marvin

This event is a 24 hour long swing dance in Southern California with live swing bands, famous DJ’s, dance contests, dance lessons, and performances all to benefit cancer research. One person from every team has to be on the dance floor for 24 hours. It’s like a relay. To get a better idea:

Band Contacts? - Event in September Needs Music

Does anyone here have contacts with any of the bands still playing in the SF Bay Area? I'm helping with an event at Union Square, they may be looking for a group to come play sometime in September. Please message me and/or forward my email to the bands if they are interested.

This will likely be more for exposure than pay, the budget is not huge if existant. Thanks in advance!

Tim
thayman@sfchronicle.com

PS - They will be interested in having dancers there too if anyone wants to get invovled. Feel free to contact me.

Hey all --

I used to go out dancing a lot back in the good ol' mid-90s and see Indigo Swing, Steve Lucky, Lee Press-On, etc... then I got fat and lazy and stopped going out as much. Now I need to get off my ass and get out there again but things have changed. Which bands are still around? Are there any new bands that have sprung up that you all like for dancing? What venues still have swing nights?

Thanks!

free exhibition show at Stanfordthis Saturday, June 4th

[posting this for a friend]

*******************

Subject: This Saturday: Two FREE (and fun!) Stanford
dance performances

Hi everyone,

I highly recommend dropping by Stanford this Saturday
night to catch a
couple of student performances.

At 6:45, watch Decadance: "fusion social dance, with a
wide variety of
music and a few jokes along the way." Swing numbers
included! :).
This is one of my favorite Stanford groups... the
performers have a
great presence about 'em, and the choreography is
typically a blast.

At 8pm, catch Swing Time: "Everything from smooth
sleek moves to
fast-paced swing with jaw-dropping aerials" with
special musical
guest: The Stanford Harmonics.

Both are at the Roble Gym at 375 Santa Teresa on
Stanford's campus.
[ Directions:

Plus... triple free: Free admission to both shows, and
free (and easy)
parking across the street :).

Regards,
Adam

I know about LitP on Sundays,
but mid-day on Saturdays I've seen a small group of swing kids dancing just off Haight St. I think it's actually ON the corner of Haight/Asbury, but it might be a block off. Right next to the Positively Haight Street touristy shop.

Anyone know anything about this??
